** README FILE FOR AUTO-CONFIG **
*********************************
(c)1993, Dr. A. Olowofoyeku.
Auto-Config is a Shareware utility to simplify the process of
changing the configurations on a PC. The problem of differing
configurations arises when programs requiring different device
drivers, TSR's and memory setups are used on the same computer.
This means having different copies of the CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and changing them as the need arises. This can
prove to be a tedious process and Auto-Config was written to help
with this task.
Auto-Config is a Menu driven program, based on a simple idea, and
which is therefore very easy to use. It operates by producing two
files for each configuration setup [a] a ".CNF" file, which
represents CONFIG.SYS and [b] a ".AUT" file which represents
AUTOEXEC.BAT. When a configuration setup is selected, the contents
of these files are copied into the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
files respectively, and then the computer is then REBOOTED. These
files should be in the root directory of the boot disk (i.e where
the config.sys and autoexec.bat files are located).
In order to prevent the directory from being littered by the .CNF
and .AUT files, when the files are created by Auto-Config, their
attributes are set to Hidden, System and Archive. This means that
they are hidden from view and so do not clutter the directory, and
they cannot be accidentally deleted (there is an option to delete
them from within Auto-Config, should this be desired).
FULL DOCUMENTATION is supplied in the form of a self-displaying
help file called "AUTODOC.COM". To view the contents of this file,
just type "AUTODOC" at the command prompt. You can browse up
and down with the arrow keys, and with PgUp, PgDn, Home, End.
You can also access this help file from the program, by pressing
F1.

**** INSTALLATION ***
*********************
The AUTO-CONFIG program files are stored in a compressed format,
in the file "AUTOCONF.BIN". In order to extract the file, you
should run the installation program "AUTOINST.EXE". All you need
to do is to type "AUTOINST" at the command prompt, and then
confirm the directory into which you want AUTO-CONFIG to be
installed.
AUTO-CONFIG is supplied with a sample configuration setup.
It is for what is considered to be a NORMAL basic system
configuration for a U.K system and contains the TWO files
that make up an AUTO-CONFIG configuration setup
[1] NORMAL.CNF (** contents to go into CONFIG.SYS)
[2] NORMAL.AUT (** contents to go into AUTOEXEC.BAT)
Before running AUTO-CONFIG for the first time, users are
advised to save copies of their AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
files. There are two ways of doing this;
EITHER
1. To COPY the current CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT into an
AUTO-CONFIG configuration setup as per the example below;
[a] COPY CONFIG.SYS MY-OLD.CNF
[b] COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT MY-OLD.AUT
This process creates a new AUTO-CONFIG configuration setup
called "MY-OLD" and this will appear in the RUN, EDIT, or
DELETE lists.
OR
2. To run AUTO-CONFIG with the "/NEW" parameter;
e.g., AUTOCONF /NEW
This process creates a new configuration setup called
"ORIGINAL". This new setup is a duplicate of your existing
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
This way, you will not lose the contents of your old system
configuration when you run AUTO-CONFIG.
** NOTE: If this advice is ignored, you may end up losing your old
configuration setup when other configuration files are copied into
your autoexec.bat and config.sys.
For detailed information on the features of AUTO-CONFIG, read
the documentation in AUTODOC.COM.

REGISTRATION
------------
This program is published under the SHAREWARE principle. This
means that users are entitled to use it for an evaluation
period of 30 days. If you wish to continue using it after this
evaluation period, you are requested to please REGISTER your
copy.
REGISTRATION costs £20 (twenty pounds sterling). Registration
provides the following benefits:
1. A copy of the most recent update of the program,
licensed to you, and without all the registration
messages.
2. Support for the program
3. Free copies of my public domain programs
4. Evaluation copies of my shareware programs
5. A clear conscience
6. The satisfaction of being an honest person
