  2.                 ** README FILE FOR AUTO-CONFIG **
  3.                 *********************************

  6.         Auto-Config is a Shareware utility to simplify the process of
  7.         changing the configurations on a PC. The problem of differing
  8.         configurations arises when programs requiring different device
  9.         drivers, TSR's and memory setups are used on the same computer.
  10.         This means having different copies of the CONFIG.SYS and
  11.         AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and changing them as the need arises. This can
  12.         prove to be a tedious process and Auto-Config was written to help
  13.         with this task.

  15.         Auto-Config is a Menu driven program, based on a simple idea, and
  16.         which is therefore very easy to use. It operates by producing two
  17.         files for each configuration setup [a] a ".CNF" file, which
  18.         represents CONFIG.SYS and [b] a ".AUT" file which represents
  19.         AUTOEXEC.BAT. When a configuration setup is selected, the contents
  20.         of these files are copied into the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
  21.         files respectively, and then the computer is then REBOOTED. These
  22.         files should be in the root directory of the boot disk (i.e where
  23.         the config.sys and autoexec.bat files are located).

  25.         In order to prevent the directory from being littered by the .CNF
  26.         and .AUT files, when the files are created by Auto-Config, their
  27.         attributes are set to Hidden, System and Archive. This means that
  28.         they are hidden from view and so do not clutter the directory, and
  29.         they cannot be accidentally deleted (there is an option to delete
  30.         them from within Auto-Config, should this be desired).

  32.         FULL DOCUMENTATION is supplied in the form of a self-displaying
  33.         help file called "AUTODOC.COM". To view the contents of this file,
  34.         just type "AUTODOC" at the command prompt. You can browse up
  35.         and down with the arrow keys, and with PgUp, PgDn, Home, End.
  36.         You can also access this help file from the program, by pressing
  37.         F1.

  40.         **** INSTALLATION ***
  41.         *********************
  42.         The AUTO-CONFIG program files are stored in a compressed format,
  43.         in the file "AUTOCONF.BIN". In order to extract the file, you
  44.         should run the installation program "AUTOINST.EXE". All you need
  45.         to do is to type "AUTOINST" at the command prompt, and then
  46.         confirm the directory into which you want AUTO-CONFIG to be
  47.         installed.

  50.         AUTO-CONFIG is supplied with a sample configuration setup.
  51.         It is for what is considered to be a NORMAL basic system
  52.         configuration for a U.K system and contains the TWO files
  53.         that make up an AUTO-CONFIG configuration setup
  54.                 [1] NORMAL.CNF  (** contents to go into CONFIG.SYS)
  55.                 [2] NORMAL.AUT  (** contents to go into AUTOEXEC.BAT)

  57.         Before running AUTO-CONFIG for the first time, users are
  58.         advised to save copies of their AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
  59.         files. There are two ways of doing this;
  60.  
  61.         EITHER
  62.  
  63.         1. To COPY the current CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT into an
  64.            AUTO-CONFIG configuration setup as per the example below;
  65.              [a] COPY CONFIG.SYS MY-OLD.CNF
  66.              [b] COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT MY-OLD.AUT
  67.           This process creates a new AUTO-CONFIG configuration setup
  68.           called "MY-OLD" and this will appear in the RUN, EDIT, or
  69.           DELETE lists.

  71.         OR
  72.  
  73.         2. To run AUTO-CONFIG with the "/NEW" parameter;
  74.              e.g.,   AUTOCONF /NEW
  75.  
  76.            This process creates a new configuration setup called
  77.            "ORIGINAL". This new setup is a duplicate of your existing
  78.            CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

  80.           This way, you will not lose the contents of your old system
  81.           configuration when you run AUTO-CONFIG.

  84.         ** NOTE: If this advice is ignored, you may end up losing your old
  85.         configuration setup when other configuration files are copied into
  86.         your autoexec.bat and config.sys.

  96.         means that users are entitled to use it for an evaluation
  97.         period of 30 days. If you wish to continue using it after this
